Why buy local instead of importing direct?
OpenSprinkler prices in USD are public. That's actually useful — it lets us show you exactly what importing costs versus buying locally. By the time FedEx, import duty and VAT land, the numbers are often closer than you think. And that's before support, warranty or a VAT invoice enter the picture.
Landed cost calculator
Adjust the hardware price and exchange rate to see the real cost of importing versus buying locally.
local delivery & VAT invoice
Duty rate approximate (Chapter 85 electronics, ~2%). VAT calculated on CIF value plus duty. Shipping estimate for a single controller. Import cost excludes time, admin and possible customs clearance delays. Local pricing includes a South African-rated power supply, local delivery, and a full SA VAT invoice — available on request.
Factor-by-factor comparison
Cost is one dimension. Here's the full picture.
| Factor | Import direct (opensprinkler.com) | Buy local (Phoenix) |
|---|---|---|
| Price transparency | USD price visible — but that's not your landed cost | ✓ Rand price on request — no surprises |
| Landed cost | ⚠ Variable Hardware + FedEx + duty + VAT on CIF | ✓ Fixed Rand price — duty paid, VAT included |
| VAT invoice | ✗ None — US receipt, no SA input tax claim | ✓ Full SARS-compliant VAT invoice |
| FX risk | ✗ Yes — price changes with the Rand daily | ✓ Fixed Rand price at time of order |
| Delivery time | 5–7 business days FedEx (same carrier we use) | ✓ 5–7 business days — comparable, duty handled |
| Customs clearance | ⚠ Your risk — delays possible, admin on you | ✓ We handle customs — delivered duty-paid |
| Warranty & returns | ✗ Return to US — shipping costs, weeks of delay | ✓ Local swap — replacement from our stock |
| Technical support | Forum / email — US timezone, generic answers | ✓ Phone & WhatsApp — SAST hours, SA expertise |
| SA infrastructure knowledge | ✗ None — borehole, Eskom, tank setups not covered | ✓ Deep local knowledge — load-shedding, borehole, tanks |
VAT-registered? You may be getting this for less than you think.
If you are a VAT vendor in South Africa, our invoice gives you a valid tax input claim. At 15%, that's effectively a 13% discount on the purchase price — one that a US receipt cannot give you. A local price that appears higher than the raw import may in fact be cheaper after VAT reclaim.
What you get beyond the hardware
These are the reasons commercial farms, estates and system integrators prefer working with us.
Load-shedding resilience
We design systems around South Africa's power reality — solar panels, LiFePO4 batteries and DC controllers keep schedules running during Stage 6.
Borehole & tank expertise
From submersible pump relays to float switches and pressure tanks — we've commissioned systems on every type of SA water source.
Local support, SAST hours
Call or WhatsApp during South African business hours. Real engineers who know OpenSprinkler, not a support ticket queue in California.
Full solution supply
Controllers, zone expanders, solenoid valves, cabling, sensor runs, enclosures and solar — one supplier, one invoice.
Trade & installer programme
Landscapers and irrigation contractors get trade pricing and dedicated technical support. We want to be your supply partner.
Commission & handover
Remote configuration, on-site commissioning, and user handover training available. We don't just ship and disappear.
About delivery lead times
A common concern with local supply is that it takes longer than importing direct. In practice, both routes use the same carrier — FedEx International Priority — and comparable transit times of 5–7 business days to Gauteng. The difference is that we handle all customs paperwork and deliver duty-paid to your door. Orders placed before noon are dispatched the same day.
